A personal first!
For some reason, I find the thought of blogging intimidating. Right from the first moment that ‘social media’ came onto my personal radar, and I read in Kristen Lamb’s book, We Are Not Alone, that she advised blogging in order for an author to build precious social platform, I’ve stubbornly refused to jump in the game. The thought of writing a blog scared me. Who was I to talk? Why would people listen? What would I say? I told my cohorts over on Writing for Children, that I couldn’t imagine I’d ever start my own. Privately, I was also afraid that if I took a leap of faith into the world of blogging, that no one would be there to catch me.

However, a few years have gone by now. I feel that I’m part of a happy thriving online writer’s community. I’m managing to work on my own middle grade fiction, and participate in my critique group, the Magnificent Five, and raise my kids, and renovate the interior of my house myself, as well as to put out a newsletter to my mailing list twice a month. I feel that now, I could try to add a blog to that list. So I asked folks on the mailing list, to blog or not to blog in last week’s newsletter, and the ‘yay’ vote was nearly unanimous. I said to my mates on Writing for Children, ‘I may actually start a blog - the rock of Gibraltar is slowly moving!!!’

They say that the reason social networking works is because people love to show off pictures and videos. On my blog will there be pictures?

Yes, there will be pictures! My two youngest boys watch a movie on their I-pad last week.

Youngest son with new puppy, Bolt, a two-month old Fox Terrier, a ball of energy!

They say that social media works because we all love to tell stories, and it provides proof of our social value. Will there be stories?
Yes, there will be stories!

Like the one about how my family says ‘you shouldn’t be on Facebook, Aunty,’ because I always put my foot in it. This week, I commented on a friend’s Easter pictures of her family, to say, I thought her father had a great smile. She messaged me later to say that he was her husband. Aunty struck again. Don’t tell my family, or I’ll never hear the end of it!

They say another thing we love about social media is the chance to share jokes. Will there be jokes?
Yes, by jingoes, there will!

Q   Why did the elephant paint his nails red?

A   I don't know, why?

Q   So he could hide in a cherry tree. Have you ever seen an elephant in a cherry tree?

A    No.

Q   See how good they hide!

That’s a joke I borrowed off my pal, Lynn Kelley. And I’ll also borrow one of her send-offs  too because I love it. See ya’ in the funny papers!

Yvette Carol :-)

p.s. Thanks so much for reading my first ever blog post.

    1. Hey, Maureen, you caught me! Thanks, mate :-) This was a bit nerve-wracking, have to say. I tried to publish on Wordpress first this evening, however it didn't want to happen easily so I tried Blogger. Which do you use? And which do you think is best?

  2. Go Yvette, you started your blog, before I could say start your blog.!

    1. Ha ha! I had heaps of 'yes, do it' responses, and only one against, which really set me thinking. Then, I felt pressured by the fact that next weekend, I'll have to put out the next newsletter so I figured this weekend was the time to do the blog. I jumped in with both feet! Are you saying I was a bit over-enthusiastic? ;-)

    2. Not at all! You have built up a healthy group of devoted followers. Go you!

    3. :-) Thanks, Jane! Actually, I was just talking with another kiwi author who was saying she sends out her newsletter to 500 recipients and she blogs regularly, and yet can't seem to drive any traffic to her blog. To my mind, and according to the prevailing wind, it's not the quantity of the friends you gather, it's the quality :-)

  5. Hooray! Yvette's blogging! :D

I was going to warn you that it often takes a long time to attract a following but since you've already built platforms elsewhere, it looks like you already have a following to comment on your blog. Excellent!

I'd suggest you put a gadget on your sidebar to let people follow you through email (that is, to get email notifications when you have a new post). I know I never remember to visit blogs unless I get a notification. :)

    Awesome first post, BTW!

p.s. don't worry about the foot in mouth thing; we all do it. I actually have a friend on FB whose new boyfriend also looks like her father (luckily, I've known her long enough to realize who he is when she posted pics or I would have said something similar...LOL!).

    1. Hi Teresa! Thanks. I'm not sure how to add the email widget yet. But then, I might use wordpress next week anyway. Thank you for the heads-up though as I'll look into that next time round, for sure. :-)

  6. Hey there! Way to go for publishing your first blog post!! I recommend you join the Insecure Writer's Support Group for starters. Like our wonderful children's writing group at WANA, the IWSG is spectacular, especially for blogging folk. We meet online once a month (1st Wed. of the month) and express our fears, woes, successes etc of writing / publishing. Often times, I find myself offering support to others, which is such a great feeling! You can sign up here: http://www.insecurewriterssupportgroup.com/p/iwsg-sign-up.html
Go into to top right, Design, "Layout" on the left, add a gadget, "followers" button on the sidebar, so we can all sign up to follow your blog. Tip: the last time I looked, they have a new Google + gadget you can add, but then on the "more gadgets" page you can scroll down to find the "followers" gadget and add that one too. It's just a way for other to add you to their blog list, so they can keep up with you and your blog. :-)

    1. I meant to say after the IWSG link, if you want people to be able to sign up to follow your blog...go the the top right of your blog...and then follow directions as I've written them. :)

    2. Wow, awesome advice, thanks, Candi! I really appreciate the hand-holding :-) I'll nip over to the group next. I ended up using blogger to launch, just as you use, because it was so quick to set up and apply yesterday. I had all sorts of issues with wordpress. Not sure whether I'll go back to it or not at this stage. We'll see. For this moment in time, we can wave at one another across the blogger blogosphere. ha ha

  7. Open the champagne! Pop! Well done. How cool you used my joke! Fun! The send of is one my sister uses and Maria, too, I believe. It's a good one, isn't it? Have fun with your blogging. I have to comment by using my old Blogger I.D.! Sorry, but it seems to be the only way I can leave comments on Blogger. It seems Wordpress is very confused when I try to sign in with Blogger, since I have two Wordpress sites. The old one is still up, but I don't use it anymore.

*Raises glass.* Cheers to your blogging adventures, Yvette!

    1. Thanks sister! I didn't mean to end up on Blogger but wordpress kept 'sticking' or 'freezing'. I still may go back to it though. Hopefully there are no blog police who tell you off for that sort of thing ;-) Have to say, your 'old blogger I.D' has a glam headshot of you! I like it. Pass the bubbles. Btw: I didn't realize until later on that I hadn't included a link with your name. My apologies!! I shall eat humble pie now.

  8. Yvette... congrats indeed on your debut as blogmistress. I look forward to your take on the writing life... why not make a jolly habit of putting your foot in it? The writing world needs more unedited truth. "Putting my foot in it." There's your blog motto. I can see it all now... fans showing up to hear ever more about the king with no clothes on. Is there not far too much conventional thinking in the wannabe writing world? Your site could be the antidote. I`m in! And all the best!

    1. You made me laugh out loud, Pj! Talk about way to turn a personality flaw into a positive. That would never have occurred to me in a million years. However, now you mention it, why the heck not? Hey, pal, thanks for stopping by my first ever outing on the blogosphere. Once I figure out whether I'm gonna use wordpress or this site, and can manage to add the sign up widgets, I'll be back. You've got me thinking, as usual, boy! And now that I'm blogging, as your views do influence me, I hope you don't mind if I sometimes refer to you, and quote you as well

  10. And now you can be a testament to the wisdom of launching a blog after having formed an online following/community because usually first posts don't have so many comments:):)

    1. Really? Thank you for telling me! Very kind of you, Pinar to call my stubborn resistance to blogging a 'wise' move. You people are my kind of people - the sort who can turn any negative into a positive. Yay!

    1. Thanks, Catherine! I guess what starts to happen is that the more we write in all these different forums, the more we hone our own voices. I hope you were able to comment without any problems?
By the way, it's good to know I'm not alone. Perhaps since C.C. is also in our group and said the same thing, we should form a sub-tribe called 'the foot-in-mouthers'? Ha ha :-)

I'm afraid I'm a little too odd to ever be part of a happy and thriving anything. So you've got me beat there, although I have been blogging since 2005.

    1. Hi Cara! Thanks for commenting on my first outing. Yay! I got some absolutely classic shots of Bolt yesterday, can't wait to post again (this week coming) and share some more of the cuteness.

As to your being 'odd', welcome to the club of misfits!! All artists, all writers - if they're true to their art must needs have a touch of the crazy working for them. That's my belief. So you should fit right in here. :-) I'll include one of my most loved quotes from the blog of the wise and wonderful author extraordinaire, P.J. Reece http://www.pjreece.ca/blog/wordpress ~

“Whoever was born with faith in the joyous tragedy, with enthusiasm for the ironic mystery; whoever sings YES; whoever risks disharmony because he desires beauty…” According to Nikos Kazantzakis, a Christian mystic, this counter-intuition is “the supreme human achievement.”
